ARGENTINA DELIVERING MORE THAN JUST MALBEC

The rising ambition of country’s winemakers is good for the industry

A high-profile release of wines from Argentina this month at LCBO Vintages outlets shows a growing appetite for the diversity of styles coming from the South American country.

For many years, Argentina and Chile shared a January spotlight at the Ontario liquor monopoly’s premium stores. Both countries’ value for money aspect, with bottles that cost less than $20, was trumpeted to consumers coming down from their holiday spending highs.

You can bet the prospects for sales are more buoyant with an August release. Even better news for Argentina’s winemakers, the spotlight is focused solely on them and the selections extend to more than just Malbec, the country’s signature grape variety.

This marketing push should go a long way to bringing wine lovers up to speed on the ongoing exploration of new regions, different varieties and wine styles. Since 1990, there’s been significant investment in new vineyards, improved equipment and research that’s brought the industry up to modern standards.

The release includes a rosé sparkling wine, a couple white wines and a nice variety of red wines, including a Cabernet Franc and two Cabernet Sauvignons.

Cabernet Franc is the toast of the wine industry right now, championed for its ability to make wines with flavour and finesse even in warmer years where Cabernet Sauvignon might get too ripe.

There are also some well-chosen Malbecs, including a stylish example made with consulting French winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet, who was in charge of the legendary Château Pétrus in Bordeaux.

The focus is squarely on premium wines from Argentina’s Mendoza region, but don’t let that discourage you.

The most expensive listing is $25 per bottle so there’s still a strong value prospect at play.

The allure of these wines is how they deliver robust flavour and character for a reasonable price, especially the rich and concentrated reds from Mendoza that would be right at home at your next barbecue.
