Is the future really female? Some questions for men

-

Re: The future really is female, not male — and it’s not fair, Oct. 30.

David Millard Haskell protests unfairness against men. Notably, men’s representation has decreased to 40 per cent in universities while suicide rates have increased. Simultaneously, men’s rights groups are being denied status by university student associations.

Underlying this argument is the assumption that, in the past, there was fairness for men. When universities were made up of more than 50 per cent men, was that better for men? Should we make men great again?

I do agree with Haskell that there is a problem facing men today: what to do about masculinity. As women gain and retain some social influence through their increasing education, men are facing a social crisis and wondering what their place is in society.

Instead of arguing for men’s rights, which implies a reversion to the idyllic ways of yore, we must push forward by asking harder questions about how men can adapt to a changing world.

How can men support their sons with their education and encourage them to graduate from high school? How can men support one another through mental health issues? When men form groups to talk about these issues, I will support their efforts. Claire Michela, Ottawa Let’s see who does a better job Men have been running the world since the beginning of time. You say women are taking over? Let’s hope they do a better job than the men are doing. Wendy Briggs-Jude, Westport Male-on-male abuse remains hidden I do not understand the sexual bias shown in the explosion of reports of sexism. It seems to be all about men abusing women.

As a heterosexual man working in the arts for four decades, I have experienced sexual harassment from men on many occasions. The perpetrators ranged from fields as far apart as politics and religion.

I cannot believe that I am an isolated case among men.

Deep inside this bigger story lies the reason men are so much less likely to report male-onmale abuse. Are the stakes so much higher for men? Thomas Brawn, Ottawa
