Possible snow, cold prompt travel advisory for Ottawa area

Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory for the Ottawa area, urging travellers to carefully consider travel plans on Thursday evening.

A combination of snowfall and rapidly falling temperatures could affect road conditions, the weather agency warns.

While Thursday will start out mild, with highs of about 7 C around noon, the temperature will drop to a low of -11 C overnight.

“As this front passes temperatures will drop and scattered rain showers will change to flurries in the evening. As a result, untreated surfaces could become icy and slippery Thursday evening.”

Environment Canada has also issued a weather alert for Wellington and Waterloo counties as snow squalls are expected to develop around the rush hour Thursday and into Friday as the cold front tracks over southern Ontario. Visibility is expected to be significantly reduced due to the heavy snow.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is monitoring the situation and may issue snow squall warnings for southern Ontario.

Meanwhile in the Ottawa area, that snowman could last into the weekend. Friday is expected to be cold and sunny with a high of -8 C and a low of -11 C overnight, with temperatures climbing to 3 C on Saturday. And yes, a chance of more snow flurries.
