Suspect in attempted break-in calls 911 with gunshot to leg
Police have charged a shooting victim who was wounded in the process of breaking and entering.
Guns and gangs detectives have charged Austin Riley Emmerson, 18, with a slew of offences including attempt to commit a breakand-enter, discharging a firearm with intent, careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon and breach of probation.
Police found Emmerson with a gunshot wound to the upper thigh, outside of 100 Monterey Dr. just after 7 a.m. Emmerson himself called 911. Paramedics told him to apply direct pressure to the wound on his thigh.
The victim, who had concerns he was going to die, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He is believed to be in stable condition.
Investigators don’t yet know if Emmerson shot himself or if he was shot by an alleged partner in crime, who hasn’t been arrested. Police believe there were two burglars at the home on Monterey Drive.
Two areas along the street were ringed by police tape, including what appeared to be the main scene of police activity in front of a detached house at the corner of Abingdon Drive. A stretch of townhouses down the street were also taped off. A police officer was busily photographing parts of the scene Friday morning.
Police continue to investigate the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call the guns and gangs unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5050. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or by downloading the Ottawa police app.
