Reclaimed wood from Atmosphère & Bois a unique way to add creative texture to your home’s decor

- BRIANA TOMKINSON

Sun-bleached and weatherbeaten, cracked and scored through hard use, or hammered under countless boot heels, reclaimed wood brings a unique and intriguing beauty to both modern and rustic spaces. The patina of history instantly adds interest to a room, and complements both rustic and modern decor.

The barn wood feature wall is probably the most common way for interior designers and DIYers to incorporate reclaimed wood into their decor, but according to J.D. Wienecke, general manager of Manotick specialty store Atmosphère & Bois, the wood can be used for a lot more than an accent wall. Reclaimed wood can be used rough, planed down, sanded, painted or polished. It can be used to create works of art, functional signs, faux beams or real structural supports, furniture, decorative accents and more.

“People can be as creative as they want to be,” said Wienecke. “That’s why we carry all our material in different formats. You can buy it already prepared so that it’s easy to install in your home, but if you want to get creative we also carry the rough material so you can do whatever you want with it.”

Wood from different sources can create a very different effect. Atmosphère & Bois carries planks reclaimed from weathered old Canadian barns, historic European railway cars and vintage whisky barrels.

Depending on the source, some of the raw boards are ghosted with old paint, crusted with drips of concrete or cracked from wear and tear. In the hands of a visionary decorator, these flaws are turned into features. For example, Wienecke recalled a contemporary, modern home that added an unexpected touch of colour and texture on the ceiling by cladding it in rough French oak reclaimed from wagon flooring.

“The boards were streaked with paint in places, so every so often you’d see a red or bright yellow stripe on the ceiling. It was a really beautiful contrast to the room,” said Wienecke. “People often think you have to have a country or rustic style home to use reclaimed wood, but it can tie into a lot of different decor.”

Examples of the wide variety of applications for reclaimed wood are on display at the Atmosphère & Bois showroom at 6178 Mitch Owens Rd., Manotick Station.
