AN ACRIMONIOUS YEAR
Feb. 14, 2017: Integrity commissioner Robert Swayze releases a ruling that concludes the “toxic relationship” between Antonakos and Coun. Doug Black is “damaging to the town.”
Feb. 23, 2017: Developer Volundur (Wally) Thorbjornsson files a complaint with the integrity commissioner against Antonakos. Thorbjornsson had worked with Antonakos on the 2014 election campaign, which Antonakos won by 262 votes over incumbent Wendy LeBlanc. Swayze dismissed claims in the complaint that Antonakos would secretly record in-camera council sessions and use the confidential information in a “smear campaign” against LeBlanc. March 7, 2017: All six councillors vote in favour of a motion that appointed Deputy Mayor Jerry Flynn as its spokesman, with Antonakos abstaining from the recorded vote.
May 9, 2017: At a raucous town council meeting, Antonakos defies calls for his resignation, a public apology or a public acknowledgment of wrongdoing. “I will not resign, and I will never admit to something I did not do.”
Swayze ruled against the mayor on the disclosure of confidential information the mayor had gleaned from in-camera council sessions in 2012 and allegedly shared with local developers.
Antonakos “refused to be interviewed” for the investigation.
Jan. 22, 2018: Integrity commissioner Swayze makes three rulings against Antonakos and recommends suspension of 30 days’ pay for each.
