Senators miss Methot — on and off the ice

The Ottawa Senators are looking forward to seeing old friend Marc Methot tonight.

Facing the Dallas Stars for the first time since he was dealt here following the expansion draft last June, the Senators admit they miss the veteran blueliner, but they’re happy he’s getting the chance to have success here.

“I loved him and he was a great guy around the room,” coach Guy Boucher said Saturday before the club’s 2-1 loss to the Arizona Coyotes.

“He was one of those guys that players gravitated to and laughed a lot. He’d be very vocal, very excited and there was always something funny around him.

“He brought a lot of things in terms of intangibles. And he wasn’t just a hockey player, we all know what he brought to us. You can only wish him the best. That’s where we are now. We shook hands with him when we knew he was gone. The first thing that came to my mind was, ‘Hey, we’re going to miss this guy.’

“We know what his role was as a player but really the person was really a nice person that we’d like to have around.”

Methot’s the kind of guy every team would want because he’s a major contributor on the ice, while off it he’s the kind of player that everybody likes because he’s easygoing, funny, smart. He’s just good company.

“He’s a great guy that fit well in the room with everyone,” centre Jean-Gabriel Pageau said. “He’s a guy that sometimes just came up with some stupid, stupid jokes all around and I think everyone liked him for that because he was so relaxed.”
