Multi-use trail plan should include ATVs

-

I agree with the idea of a multiuse plan because it allows all users to enjoy the trail. I fail to see much difference in an ATV passing a pedestrian at 20 km/ h versus a bicycle passing at 20 km/ h. My nine-year-old and 11-year-old share that view. Kids walk to school every day with cars passing them at double or more that speed, and it is accepted as safe.

We do not have a serious problem with dangerously operated ATVs in our town, so there is not a current negative precedent. ATVs are allowed on most roads in our town and yet there is very little ATV traffic, especially near urban areas. I would speculate the trail would not be extremely busy.

Given that ATV travel is mainly a daytime activity, I would also speculate nighttime traffic would be minimal. ATVs operated at the suggested speed limits would make noise comparable to a car. My bedroom window is about 400 metres from the trail through an open field and I do not worry about noise.

The mayor has stated that ATV riders are “scofflaws.” How can the leader of our local government feel it is OK to insult his constituents and others? This is a public trail which I feel should be accessible to all members of the public. I believe our mayor owes our town an apology for his prejudices. We need to work together to achieve a fair outcome for all.
