Perth festival highlights tiny house ‘buzz’

- HOLLY MENCHETTI

Imagine living in house measuring from 100 to 400 square feet. Your kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and living area all fit into this small, confined area — by choice. Having a hard time picturing it? This is the reality for those who choose to live in a tiny house. And if you’re still having trouble getting your head around it, you’re invited to come see what it’s all about at the annual Century 21 Perth Tiny House & Green Home Festival on April 21.

The festival provides an opportunity to tour inside tiny houses and get a look at what living in a tiny house entails, and also to check out the unique designs, layouts and elements that make up a tiny house. This event is organized by The 2 Marys Inc.

“There’s a real buzz around the tiny house movement, especially for women,” said Mary Rothfels, the secretary and treasurer for The 2 Marys Inc.

“We’re looking forward to bringing that tiny house excitement to Perth.”

The theme this year is energy efficiency, so attendees will also get the opportunity to learn about sustainable housing trends and ways to reduce their ecological footprint while building homes. Another focus will be affordable housing and ways to get permission to to live in a tiny house.

“Another exciting aspect is the potential for tiny houses to help address the issue of homelessness, especially for youth,” added Rothfels.

There will be speeches about green living, social housing and new technologies. Also included are tips on how to maximize the use of small spaces and how to build small.

The April 21 event will be held at the Algonquin College Perth Campus.

This event is also in partnership with Algonquin College’s Heritage Institute with support by Century 21 Explorer Realty Inc. of Carleton Place, The Perth Planing Mill, DuPont Tyvek and Guy Saumure & Sons.

Tickets costs $20 for adults and are free for children under 16.
