The Joker to get his own movie

Jared Leto excited to reprise the role the actor made his own in Suicide Squad

-

Jared Leto is reportedly set to star in a stand-alone movie about the Joker.

The actor played the iconic Batman villain in Suicide Squad alongside an all-star cast including Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Cara Delevingne in 2016.

This marked the third instalment in the DC Extended Universe, and according to Variety, Jared is set to reprise his supervillain role in what could be the first of many films to branch off from the DC Comics’ anti-hero team.

As well as taking on the lead role, insiders also shared that the Oscar winner will act as an executive producer on the feature, which is currently without a title.

Plot details are unknown at this point, but executives at Warner Bros. apparently intend to expand on the world depicted in Suicide Squad.

However, without a writer on board at this time, it is unclear when the flick would begin shooting, or whether it would be shot before the Suicide Squad sequel, which is expected to go into production sometime in 2019.

Leto previously expressed interest in returning to the role, after many fans claimed that his version of the Joker was underused when the star made his DC debut.

“I think that I brought so much to the table in every scene, it was probably more about filtering all of the insanity,” he told the BBC. “Because I wanted to give a lot of options, and I think there’s probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie.”

Warner Bros. bosses are also working on the character’s origin tale, which will be directed by The Hangover’s Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix reportedly in the running to star in the project.

However, the studio emphasized that this did not mean the end for Leto’s version as this film will fall under a new banner separate from the current cinematic DC universe.

A movie based on Robbie’s interpretation of Harley Quinn is also in the works and will be helmed by Cathy Yan.
