Sorry About our president, Canada
Re: Trump slams ‘dishonest & weak’ Trudeau, backs out of G7 consensus, June 9.
As an American citizen, this is a sincere apology on my part and that of my other American colleagues who are embarrassed by President Donald Trump’s behaviour as a guest during the recent G7 summit in La Malbaie, Que.
Not all Americans subscribe to boorish and bullying behaviour as a way to influence or negotiate, regardless of political or economic biases or concerns. I will not comment on the historical, financial or current correctness of any tariffs or political stance, as that belongs in the purview of professional politicians, lawyers and economists. However, much the same as an embarrassed father would issue an apology to a teacher for a naughty child, I feel compelled to try to acknowledge and make some small reparation for Mr. Trump’s poor manners, lack of decorum and ungracious insults during the summit.
I’m sure in his single-minded focus was well intended, but he doesn’t stop to consider the wider or longer consequences of his outbursts.
Undoubtedly, enormous effort and hope went into the planning and execution of this important summit. No doubt there were also high expectations for significant social, economic and environmental progress. I am therefore deeply sorry that our president derailed and diminished this unique opportunity.
Despite the political and economic ramifications that will follow this unfortunate event, please accept our appreciation for your efforts and apology for Mr. Trump’s behaviour.
