Melinda Karlsson received public support from the wives of several other NHL players on Tuesday.

After this newspaper reported that the wife of Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson had sought an order of protection against Monika Caryk, the long-time girlfriend of Senators forward Mike Hoffman, Twitter was abuzz.

Those commenting included Julie Turris, the wife of forward Kyle Turris, who was traded to the Nashville Predators by the Senators last November.

“This crossed the line from cyber bullying to something entirely different in April,” Julie Turris wrote on Twitter. “Unfortunate that this private matter has become public. Incredibly proud of my girl for standing up for herself and her family, it took courage.”

In Melinda Karlsson’s sworn statement to the Ontario Court, she said, “Monika Caryk has uttered numerous statements wishing my unborn child dead. She also uttered that she wished I was dead and that someone should ‘take out’ my husband’s legs to ‘end his career.’ Monika Caryk has posted over 1,000 negative and derogatory statements about me as a professional.”

While Erik Karlsson and other current and former Senators teammates of Hoffman weren’t talking publicly Tuesday, there were other Twitter comments from other players’ wives.

“Oh man, if you only knew how unsurprising this actually is,” wrote Marlee Hammond, wife of former Senators goaltender Andrew Hammond, who was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in November. “Horrible just horrible. And the worst part of this is how she just wanted to keep this private because she’s THAT nice of a person even when a person can be this cruel to her.”

While a National Hockey League dressing room has its share of leaders and support players, the players’ wives and girlfriends also have their own structure when it comes to team functions and charitable events. As is the case with players, there are often clashes of personalities, jealousies and disputes.

Hoffman said he and Caryk denied the allegations.
