Argos switch starting quarterback
Toronto Argonauts head coach Marc Trestman is turning to quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson as the 1-5 Boatmen search for answers to their woeful CFL season.
James Franklin went 1-3 as Toronto’s starting pivot following the neck injury to Ricky Ray. Trestman made clear the club hasn’t given up on Franklin.
“We’ve had a month to assess James and we feel very good about his future, we really do,’’ said Trestman, whose team committed seven turnovers last Friday in losing to Winnipeg. “We also said (starting quarterback) would be a competition and we want to give McLeod a chance. He’s been here a year and a half, he’s a dedicated member of our football team and he deserves an opportunity to start.”
One of the constants with this team has been Trestman’s use of the word fluid when describing the team’s roster and the ongoing process to establish a roster capable of defending its Grey Cup title.
The Argos don’t know whether Ray is done, but they do need to find an heir apparent for the fourtime Grey Cup champion.
“It’s still a competition and the quarterbacks knew that going in,” Trestman said. “We haven’t really resolved anything other than it’ll be Mac’s turn this week.”
It’s a short week, the Argos effectively having two full practice days to prepare for Ottawa, the East leaders who are coming off a win in Hamilton.
The Argos then have a bye week following Thursday night’s matchup, a time that will likely be spent contemplating the roster and whether Franklin is best suited to lead an offence that has had a tough time staying on the field, much less scoring touchdowns.
Bethel-Thompson has been around the football block, he’s got a big arm and stands tall in the pocket, but he lacks playing time. He turns 30 this Friday. “I’m excited to get going, but the biggest thing is that we need to get a win,’’ Bethel-Thompson said. “I have immense love for the guys on this team and the coaches. I’ll do what I possibly can, do my role, and we need a win.”
Ottawa is the first Eastern foe the Argos will play following six straight against the West.
