It’s not easy to hit the ‘pause’ button
Re: Tories press pause on welfare ‘mess’, Aug. 1. Reading Minister Lisa MacLeod’s comment that the social assistance system in Ontario “needs a pause,” I am left to wonder if those who rely on the system are expected to simply “pause” their lives over the next three months while they await a new and improved plan from the government.
As a retired physical education department head and former school administrator, I was concerned to see the hold that was put on the physical and health education curriculum as the province reverted to a guideline that is 20 years old.
I became even more worried when I realized that the new government did not seem to have a clear plan to replace the document but seemed to be engaging in a planning process of “Ready! Fire! Aim!” I hope that we are not seeing a similar approach to social assistance. People’s lives are at stake.
I am encouraged by one aspect of the information that was shared. MacLeod (MPP for Nepean) indicates that “the best social program is a job.” I completely agree that this is the case for many people who are capable but struggle to find work.
I look forward to hearing about the plan that the Progressive Conservative government has to ensure that this is an area of sincere focus in their planning process.
