LAFC, which lost Canadian midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye to season-ending ankle surgery, has been linked to veteran Brazilian defender Danilo Silva. Toronto, which had two open international slots after the departure of midfielders Ager Aketxe and Mariano Mino, has said it is holding transfer talks, but will only pull the trigger if the fit is right.

Edelman apologizes for drug violation

Julian Edelman has made peace with the fact he won’t be playing football for the first four weeks of the regular season. It won’t stop the veteran Patriots receiver from preparing like he will be on the field. Edelman made several rounds of apologies to his team and fans following the four-game suspension handed down by the NFL for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancers. Now he says he plans to use what’s left of training camp to make sure his surgically repaired knee will be ready when he is able to return. The 32-year-old receiver missed the entire 2017 season with a torn right anterior cruciate ligament.

Caton-brown joins wolfpack

The Toronto Wolfpack, who have lost backs Greg Worthington and Adam Higson for the season, have signed Mason Caton-Brown from Super League side Wakefield Trinity for their post-season run. The 25-year-old Caton-Brown, who can play both centre and wing, joined Wakefield last year from Salford, where he scored 25 tries in 37 appearances. Toronto reportedly beat out Hull KR and Salford to get Caton-Brown, who started his pro career with the London Broncos. Toronto (20-2-1) opens the post-season push for promotion to the elite Super League on Aug. 12 at Halifax RLFC (16-6-1), the first of seven games in the so-called Super 8s qualifiers.
