10 TAKEN TO HOSPITAL
Emirates Flight EK203 landed around 9:10 a.m. local time Wednesday. The airline says about 10 people — seven crew and three passengers — were taken to hospital.
2 100 PASSENGERS COUGHED NON-STOP
The jet’s pilot declared a medical emergency before landing and reported two male passengers with extremely high fevers and about 100 passengers “coughing non-stop,” according to ABC 7 NY, a local news website.
3 FLU SUSPECTED
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 100 of the 521 people aboard were evaluated after complaining of illness, including cough and fever. Medical workers took passengers’ temperatures on the tarmac while evaluating them. Officials said the symptoms point to a flu virus. News helicopters showed the jet sitting on the tarmac surrounded by ambulances, vehicles and airport personnel.
4 OUTBREAK IN MECCA
Eric Phillips, a spokesman for New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, said some of the passengers appeared to have come from Mecca, Saudi Arabia — which is experiencing a flu outbreak.
5 TRAVEL HISTORY
Passengers who were not affected were able to continue on their way a few hours after the plane landed. Larry Coben said on Twitter that fellow passengers were asked to fill out CDC forms detailing where people have recently travelled.
