Hubley returns to council for third time

- KEN WARREN

A familiar face is returning to represent Kanata South.

Allan Hubley won the ward Monday for a third consecutive time, defeating challengers Steve Anderson, Mike Brown and Doug Large. With all polls reporting, Hubley had 45.5 per cent of the vote, to 31.5 per cent for Anderson, and 22 per cent for Brown.

Hubley has been a councillor since 2010, when he promised he wouldn’t seek more than two terms in office. That year, he prevailed over five other hopefuls and captured almost half of the vote.

When he ran for re-election in 2014, Hubley faced two candidates who registered at the last minute. He was returned to office after winning nearly 85 per cent of almost 12,000 votes cast.

Formerly a senior manager in the federal public service, Hubley has distinguished himself on council as a fiscal conservative unafraid of voting against the majority of his peers. His name was mentioned as a possible Conservative candidate in the 2015 federal election.

Responding to a Citizen survey during the campaign, the other contenders identified roads and access to public transit as top issues for the ward. Hubley did not respond to requests to participate in the survey.

Hubley, who was born in Annapolis, N.S, and moved to Kanata in 1978, is married, has three children and one grandchild. His son James committed suicide in 2011 at the age of 15, and since then, Hubley has advocated strongly for mental health initiatives.
