Results for Ottawa-area municipalities totted up after voting snafu

Municipalities across Eastern Ontario where voting was extended due to technical difficulties have started to share the results from their polls.

The municipalities nearest to Ottawa that were affected by Monday’s technical snafus included Renfrew, Laurentian Valley Township, Pembroke, Petawawa and the Whitewater Region.

In Renfrew, Don Eady was elected mayor. Mike Coulas, Andrew Evans, Sandi Heins, Arelene Jamieson and Tom Sidney were elected as councillors.

In Laurentian Valley, Steve Bennett has been elected mayor. Jennifer Gauthier, Keith Watt, Allan Wren, Brian Hugli and Chris Pleau were elected as councillors.

In Petawawa, Robert Sweet is returning as mayor. Gary Serviss, Tom Mohns, Theresa Sabourin, Murray Rutz, James Carmody and Matthew Mclean have been elected as councillors.

In Whitewater, Michael Moore has been elected as mayor. Cathy Regier has been elected as reeve. Charlene Jackson, Dave Mackay, Daryl Mclaughlin, Neil Nicholson and Christopher Olmstead have been elected as councillors.

In Pembroke, Michael LeMay is returning as mayor. The remainder of council for Pembroke is made up of elected representatives from other municipalities within the region.

Results are still considered to be “unofficial” and subject to change.

All of the municipalities that were affected by technical issues Monday were clients of Coloradobased Dominion Voting.

Dominion is one of four companies that supplied Ontario municipalities with services in this municipal election.

On Monday night, Dominion posted a statement saying the glitch was the result of a Toronto co-location provider that placed an unauthorized limit on incoming voting traffic of about one-tenth of the system’s designated bandwidth.

The company was unaware of the glitch until it was alerted by the municipalities that are its customers. In those 90 minutes, voters experienced slow response time and system timeouts.
