DREAMING OF NET-ZERO HOME?

2019 CHEO lottery prize unveiled

- LUKE CARROLL

This year’s CHEO lottery dream home is a combination of comfort and sustainability.

The grand prize in the annual lottery fundraiser for the hospital features a nearly $2.4-million, two-floor home in Stittsville, complete with a large master bedroom suite, a basement home theatre and a personal gym. The home is 5,641 square feet and also fully furnished.

This year’s prize is a net-zero home, meaning it produces at least as much energy as it consumes on an annual basis. It comes with solar panels on the roof, helping alleviate any energy bills in the winter time.

“If you can imagine living in a house like this and not having to pay hydro, you wouldn’t believe me,” said Brent Strachan, Ottawa division president of Minto Communities.

Continuing the theme of sustainability, the $2.5-million grand prize also includes an electric 2019 Nissan Leaf Plus, in addition to Ottawa Redblacks season tickets and more. The grand total for the CHEO lottery dream home is a record setting $3.9 million, compared to $3.4 million last year.

The house is part of a Minto subdivision called Potter’s Key and adjoins the Feedmill Creek Conservation area. The area has developed at a rapid pace, with many homes in the neighbourhood built in the last year.

“Within these new homes there are families, children who will come to rely on CHEO,” Kevin Keohane, president and CEO of the CHEO Foundation.

Designer Tanya Collins described the style of the home as having a “Hamptons vibe” with a coastal and comfortable feel.

The four-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home is complete with a large kitchen perfect for hosting dinner parties, said Collins.

The master bedroom is more than 350 square feet.

However, Collins said her favourite part of the home is the living and dining area, complete with four couches, a fireplace and plenty of natural light from the large windows.

The first deadline prize includes a trip for two to London and Liverpool to see Elton John’s farewell tour, as well as a chance to win one of 50 pairs of RBC Bluesfest tickets. The early bird draw includes $250,000 cash and a trip for two to Los Angeles to see the Ellen DeGeneres show live is Nov. 15.
