CHILLS AND THRILLS

-

MARITIME MUSEUM OF BRITISH COLUMBIA, VICTORIA

Formerly the city’s prison, this building is home to the ghost of Sir Matthew Baillie Begbie, known as the Hanging Judge for his fondness of sending people to the gallows. If you peek through the windows near the entrance, a bearded figure might be seen floating down the stairs towards you.

BANFF SPRINGS HOTEL, BANFF, ALTA.

This hotel, built in 1888, is the most picturesque spiritually-troubled building in Canada. A bride who fell down the stairs, a bellman named Sam and a number of other departed guests haunt the luxury hotel. If you thought The Shining was creepy, you haven’t seen anything yet.

KEG MANSION, TORONTO

Come for the strip loin, stay for the spirits! The Keg Steakhouse, once the home of the Massey family, is the site of spooky visitations by a maid who hung herself here in 1915. The tale of terror says that it was either Lillian Massey’s death overwhelming the maid with grief or she was having an affair with one of the Massey men and feared being caught. The ghostly sight of a maid with rope around her neck has terrified guests for years.

THE HOCKEY HALL OF FAME, TORONTO

Before it was the home of the Stanley Cup, the Hall was a Bank of Montreal branch. According to legend, a bank teller named Dorothy killed herself after she was romantically rejected by the manager. Hockey fans have been saying they can hear a woman screaming throughout the building, unable to find the source of the screech. Maybe she’s just an Ottawa Senators fan howling at last season’s last place finish?

WEST POINT LIGHTHOUSE, O’LEARY, P.E.I.

Lighthouses and ghost stories are pretty much synonymous and the East Coast has plenty of both. On the west shore of the small province stands a black and white striped lighthouse looking like an old-time bank robber.

It’s thought that the first keeper, Willie, haunts the tower to remain ever watchful over his post.
