The spread of COVID-19 at Carlingview Manor is now among the deadliest institutional outbreaks in Eastern Ontario with 131 residents and 55 staff members testing positive for the virus in the 303-bed long-term care facility on Carling Avenue.

According to a statement Wednesday from Revera, which operates the home and several others in the Ottawa area, 12 Carlingview Manor residents have died from the virus.

Residents who have tested positive are in isolation, Revera said, and staff members who tested positive are self-isolating at home.

Ottawa Public Health to date has confirmed 23 institutional outbreaks in the city. Eleven of those are facility-wide outbreaks in long-term care facilities, including Carlingview Manor, while the agency has confirmed outbreaks (at least one case) in seven retirement homes, four in hospital units and one in a group-home setting.

The most recent seniors’ facility to battle an outbreak in Ottawa is the Empress Kanata retirement home, which detected an outbreak in its memory unit on Monday, according to the latest OPH data.

The outbreak at Carlingview Manor was first detected April 8 when one staff member tested positive for COVID -19, and according to Revera the facility consulted with OPH and followed “strict pandemic outbreak protocols and infection control practices.”

Within a week seven residents and seven staff had tested positive. On Sunday Revera confirmed 11 residents had died, while the virus had spread to 51 residents and 28 staff. In a statement Wednesday, Revera confirmed one more resident has since died, while the number of residents infected by COVID -19 has more than doubled.

“We offer our most sincere condolences to the families and friends of the people we have lost to this pandemic,” Revera chief medical officer Dr. Rhonda Collins said in a statement Wednesday.

Staff caring for those residents in isolation are wearing full protective equipment and all staff are required to wear a surgical mask at all times.

Revera said staff are doing “enhanced cleaning” and the home has adjusted its schedules and activities to “maximize physical distancing.”
