Sports-loving twins right at home in Bud Bubble

- TIM BAINES

Their mom Carol taught twin sisters Amanda and Brittany van Frankfoort how to catch a football and throw a baseball when they weren't much more than three years old.

The 25-year-old twins are sports fans, always have been. They've got a thing for the Dallas Cowboys, just like their dad Ron. And they're not just the kind that throws on a jersey and claims to be a fan. They talk it. They live it, it's their job to know it. The twins, in 2017, branded their own company (and website) — Timeout with the Twins (timeoutwiththetwins.com) — giving them an opportunity to add their own touch to video storytelling.

So, along with friends Ally Davis and Selina Brown, they were the perfect choice as winners of Round 1 of Budweiser Canada's Bud Bubble, after submitting their video, titled B.U.D.S.

Driven from Ottawa to the Toronto area in an SUV on Tuesday, they'll be in the Bud Bubble until next Monday morning. With a sports theatre room showing baseball and football games among other things, there's also an on-site hot tub, fire pit, gym, personal chef, gaming station and plenty of other sports activities — the four women will be pampered. Plus, they get $5,000.

Another friend, Kelsea Anstey, couldn't go because of other commitments.

“There are five of us in the friend group; unfortunately the dates didn't work out for Kelsea,” Amanda said. “While we were prepared to have a friendly faceoff — like a passing drill or a quarterback challenge or something like that to decide who went, it didn't come to that. From the beginning, we knew it would be with those girls. Once we were able to expand our bubble, those were the three that were welcomed in and it's stayed that way. We couldn't imagine better friends to celebrate sports and our friendship with than Selina and Ally.”

Asked what their relationship is like, Brittany said: “We never know how to answer that. It sounds cheesy, but in our case it's really like being blessed with a best friend from birth, someone with whom you can go through every aspect of life and who always understands you.”

So these sisters and their buds are experiencing a trip of a lifetime, with a strong sports twist — inside the Bud Bubble.

A couple of weeks back, the twins were watching their Cowboys play and saw an ad for the Budweiser contest. They decided to do a mockumentary with a Friends-like theme.

Last Friday, they got a direct message telling them they had won. There was no question who they wanted along for the ride. The women had met a bit less than five years ago on a football field. They play twice a week.

They've taken big steps in carving out their niche in the sports world. For the Carleton University journalism graduates, it's always made sense.

“Our whole lives, sports have been at the centre of everything,” Brittany said. “We can remember being six-year-olds in elementary school and being personally offended when kids would write `Sens suck' in chalk. We'd spend our recess scuffing out the chalk marks that said anything derogatory about the Senators. From there and playing sports, it's carried on through our lives.

“We decided we would take the leap, become entrepreneurs and launch our own sports media business because we couldn't imagine anything other than working with each other and trying to make a career in sports.”

For the next few days, they'll sit back in sports heaven and try to take it all in.
