New Subaru BRZ coupe has more of everything

- ALEX REID Driving.ca

Subaru took the covers off its redesigned 2022 BRZ mid-November, revealing a sports coupe with more power, more tech, and more everything.

The BRZ retains the proportions of the previous model, but features a radically redesigned fascia and tail panel. There are now creases everywhere, including two of them on the rear quarter panels.

The front grille has changed in a big way, and is now flanked by air vents. The headlights are a more svelte shape, which matches the rear tail light design. The tail panel features a ducktail lip atop the trunk lid, as well as dual exhausts. A set of 17-inch wheels are standard, while 18-inch units are available.

Under the hood is a new 2.4-litre boxer engine, this time producing 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 23 and 28 over the previous model, respectively. The engine can be paired to either a six-speed manual transmission with a short-throw shifter, or a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters and downshift rev-matching. All BRZ models feature a limited-slip differential.

The weight has increased slightly to 1,277 kilograms (2,815 pounds), and the vehicle has also increased in size. The wheelbase is now 2,575 millimetres, and the overall length is 4,265 mm. According to Subaru, the chassis is now 50 per cent stiffer than before.

On the inside, drivers will find a seven-inch digital dashboard, a new eight-inch infotainment touch-screen, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a suite of safety equipment.
