RB Harris stays with hometown Bombers

-

One by one, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have brought back the bulk of their 2019 Grey Cup team, but with each signing there remained a caveat: what about running back Andrew Harris?

On Friday, the Bombers removed that concern, re-signing the Grey Cup MVP, top Canadian and CFL rushing champion three years running to a one-year contract extension.

A Winnipeg native who's become one of the game's most decorated players, Harris will enter his fifth season with his hometown team. He could have become a free agent next month.

He accomplished the ultimate goal in helping the Bombers win the city's first Grey Cup in 29 years, leading the way with 134 yards rushing, 35 receiving and scoring two touchdowns in a 33-12 win over Hamilton.

With 1,380 yards along the ground in 2019, the 33-year-old became the league's all-time yardage leader by a Canadian and the alltime leader in yards from scrimmage by a Canadian with 14,145. But he's no one-trick horse. In 2017, his second season with the Bombers, the five-time CFL all-star also broke the league record for receptions by a running back with 105.

He caught 70 passes for 529 yards and four touchdowns in 2019.

Harris spent his first six seasons with the B.C. Lions, where he won his first Grey Cup in 2011 and was named the Most Valuable Canadian in a win over the Bombers.

Meanwhile, across town, the Winnipeg Jets addressed their third-string goalie issue, claiming 28-year-old Swede Anton Forsberg off waivers.

Forsberg began the season with Edmonton, was put on waivers and claimed by Carolina, then put on waivers again this week.

By claiming him off waivers, the Jets will have to put him on their NHL roster as the third goalie behind Connor Hellebuyck and Laurent Brossoit or else put him on waivers again to send him down to the minors or even their taxi squad.

Forsberg has a career 12-25-4 record, 3.22 goals-against-average and .901 save percentage.
