Hummer EV's VIN 001 to be auctioned off

- MATTHEW GUY

With the entire hammer price going to charity, the first production example of GMC's new Hummer EV pickup truck will cross the Barrett-Jackson auction block in March. GM is also auctioning the first production Corvette convertible at the same event, with proceeds going to charity.

Technically, this auction is for the rights to purchase VIN 001; it's unlikely the winning bidder will lay eyes on the rig they're buying at the sale in March because production isn't scheduled to begin until later in the year.

“The sale of these remarkable GM vehicles is an important part of our effort to support some very worthwhile charities,” said Barrett-Jackson president Steve Davis.

“The thrill of being the winning bidder for either one of these collectible vehicles will only be sweetened by the fact that 100 per cent of the hammer price will go to benefit our nation's veterans, as well as families in need across Southeastern Michigan.”

The new Hummer EV is a first foray for GM into the all-electric pickup market. Depending on trim level, this truck will have up to three electric motors and is expected to make a total of 1,000 horsepower. A cleverly named Watts to Freedom (WTF) mode will apparently permit acceleration runs to highway speed in three seconds flat. Off-road fans will enjoy the Crab Walk mode, intended to permit low-speed diagonal driving, a trick that could assist with getting out of gnarly situations. Driving.ca
