Cooking 4 Mental Health

Chef ’s Paradise, the popular Ottawa family owned and operated kitchen supply store, has been running virtual cooking classes throughout the pandemic and has recently brought a charity component into the mix. The first recipient was Kids Up Front Ottawa, and next up is The Royal.

An online cooking class will be taking place Sunday, Feb. 21, from 2:30-4 p.m. with chef Walid El-Tawel, project manager at Chef ’s Paradise. The mid-afternoon event is geared to bring the whole family together, and the recipe is easy enough for children to prepare with the help of an adult. Chef ’s Paradise plans to keep the group size limited so interaction with viewers creating the fresh crab and avocado dish at home can be maintained.

“Crab is actually one of the best resources for protein, which a lot of people don’t know,” said Candace Sutcliffe, COO and co-owner of Chef ’s Paradise. “It is because of the fibres itself; it is really easy to eat. There are a lot of proteins that help with mental stability, and it’s also really easy to digest.”

When asked why they decided to support The Royal, Sutcliffe said: “I am on the executive board of The Royal Ottawa Young Professionals Network. ROYPN started and had the first meeting last February. We

had big plans for last year to do different fundraising events; 11 young professionals from different areas and different businesses in the Ottawa region, promoting mental health and raising awareness and funds for The Royal Ottawa Foundation.” But with the pandemic, plans had to shift.

One hundred per cent of the event’s proceeds will be donated to The Royal. Tickets can be purchased at www. chefsparadise.ca/liveathome.
