Beau’s Oktoberfest Virtual Ride
Beau’s Oktoberfest Virtual Ride will have bike tires spinning until Oct. 15 to raise money for youth homelessness through United Way. Cyclists can ride any distance, anywhere, outside or with a virtual cycling program, all while helping youth find a safe place to call home.
“There are 1,000 to 1,400 homeless youth in Ottawa,” said Mark Belanger, director of strategic partnerships at United Way East Ontario. “Without a safe place to call home, youth are incapable of self-isolating, putting themselves and others at greater risk of contracting COVID-19. Without access to computers and internet, their connection to social services, mentorship and friends has been completely cut off. The hardest-hit industries during the pandemic are retail, restaurants and tourism. Where are youth working for the most part? In these areas.
“We invest in programs that provide housing supports, employment training, mental health resources, educational achievement and more,” Belanger adds. “We also advocate to strengthen the system that supports at-risk youth.”
This year’s Beau’s Oktoberfest Virtual Ride will not be taking cyclists to Vankleek Hill for a festival to celebrate at the end, but that shouldn’t stop anyone from jumping on their bike and getting out there to help support such an important cause.
