SOLO 300 Sail for Camp Trillium and Camp Ooch

-

David Morralee is at it again, working on his 17 th fundraising event to help others while mixing in a whole lot of fun. Back in August 2020, “Super Dave” Morralee moved onto his 29-foot sailboat and took to the Ottawa River for a six-day voyage to raise awareness and funds for Camp Ooch and Camp Trillium. This year he has 10 others joining him on the water, sailing 150 to 300 kilometres, and one cyclist setting out to ride 300 km.

Camp Trillium and Camp Ooch joined forces in 2020. They help change the lives of over 2,000 kids a year through cancer journeys, campfires and canoe trips. The privately-funded camp provides a yearround community and in-hospital and overnight camp programs for children at any stage of their cancer journey. The camp is the only overnight oncology camp in Canada able to provide on-site IV chemotherapy and blood transfusions. This special place is often referred to as the social cure for cancer, a place where the only elephant in the room will be handcrafted out of papier-mâché and pipe cleaners.

“We’re really about trying to create awareness,” said Morralee. “Hopefully the funds will flow. I’ve been involved for 20 years with the camp. It’s close to my heart. I think it’s a great and niche charity. That’s why we want to draw awareness.”

The sailors will hit the water Aug. 10 and wrap up Aug. 15 at the Nepean Sailing Club. To learn more about the adventure and to donate, head to https://support.ooch.org/solo300/ davidmorralee.
