Ottawa firefighters douse east-end fire

-

Ottawa firefighters doused “large amounts of garbage” in an early morning Sunday blaze inside a waste transfer warehouse in southeast Ottawa. Firefighters were called to the building on Glenfield Drive, near Stevenage and Overton drives, after receiving an alert from an alarm company at 5:43 a.m. reporting the fire alarms were sounding inside the warehouse. First responders arrived at 5:50 a.m. and found “large amounts of garbage on fire” inside the building, said a release from Ottawa Fire Services. Firefighters brought in multiple fans to ventilate the warehouse, sprayed foam to help contain the fire, and even used heavy machinery already on the scene to break up piles of garbage, which allowed firefighters to attack the heart of the blaze. The fire was declared under control at 8:14 a.m. There were no injuries reported. Several hours later, in central Ottawa, Ottawa fire received a 911 call at 9:26 a.m. from the tenant of a multi-unit home on Lisgar Street reporting a kitchen fire. The first crews arrived three minutes later to find flames inside the kitchen that started on the stove and had extended to the cabinets. Additional crews began searching the unit and were able to safely rescue the owner's dog and cat from the fire. The blaze was brought under control by 9:37 a.m. Firefighters treated one patient for non-fire related injuries and transferred the patient to the care of the Ottawa Paramedic Service.
