When Daisy found Sophie, it was a match made in pet heaven

- By Linda Sweeney, Miramichi, N. B.

When Daisy met Sophie, it was a match made in pet heaven.

Once upon a time, a tiny ball of yellow fluff peered out from under the old run-down red barn, bright blue eyes twinkling in the morning sun. Blinking a few times, the little kitten couldn’t believe her eyes— before her lay fields of daisies.

Daisy, as her momma lovingly called her, had no idea she had been named after the pretty flowers that surrounded her on all sides. As she thought of her momma, a tear rolled down her cheek and plopped onto the tip of her whiskers. Now that she was big enough to go out on her own, she remembered her momma’s words very well, “You’ve grown into a wonderful little kitten, Daisy. Now it’s time to go out into the world and hopefully find a little human who will love you as much as I have—just remember to visit your momma every now and then.”

As Daisy skipped through the field of flowers, she was quite excited to see the sun, blue sky and fluffy white clouds. Her delicate fur blew softly in the light breeze as she admired the amazing scenery around her. She enjoyed having a little chat with Mr. Raccoon, and told him she loved the mask he was wearing. “Where are you headed, little kitten?” he asked. “Well,” she said, “my momma told me I might find a little human in this big land who will love me as much as she does, but I’m not sure where to look.”

“Oh, I do hope you find someone, little kitten,” said Mr. Raccoon. “Everyone needs someone to love them!”

After meeting Mrs. Deer, Mr. Skunk and some baby chicks, Daisy was beginning to feel lonely as she travelled along her way in search of a little human. But she thought to herself, How will I know when I’ve found one? I have no idea what they look like!

Feeling quite sad, Daisy continued on her way and came across a bubbling brook—and thank goodness she did, as she was feeling really thirsty! As she lapped up the refreshing cool water, she heard a noise she had never heard before. It sounded gentle and kind and made her feel happy inside. A little girl named Sophie sat on a rock sweetly singing a lullaby that her mommy sang to her every night before bed. Daisy had never heard anything so angelic. Daisy made her way toward the soft voice. Timidly, she got closer to Sophie and mewed in a tiny voice, as she brushed up against her leg. Sophie’s eyes lit up as she scooped up the fluffy ball of fur. “My mommy told me last week I could have a kitten to love,” she happily exclaimed. “How did you ever find me, little kitty?”

Purring softly, Daisy snuggled into Sophie’s arms and thought to herself, “This must be the little human my momma told me about—i love her already!”

Sophie hugged her tighter and whispered into her ear, ”I love you, little kitty. Your fluffy yellow fur reminds me of the daisies blowing gently in the breeze, so I think Daisy would be the perfect name for you!”

Squeezing her gently she said, “Come Daisy, let’s go introduce you to my mommy!”
