Our Canada

NEW POSSIBILITIES

- Gary George gary_george@rd.com

If you’re anything like me, it may have taken a little while to come to terms with the fact that summer is indeed truly over. Now that fall has arrived, though, there’s a whole new set of possibilities for you to enjoy—starting with the latest issue of your favourite magazine.

Autumn is, of course, gloriously colourful in many parts of Canada, which is the central theme of our cover, as well as the breathtaking photo feature beginning on page 44. Kudos to the contributors whose photos were selected to appear, not only for their abilities with a camera, but also for getting out there and enjoying the great outdoors.

With Thanksgiving arriving in mid-october, we thought you might like to try out some new recipe possibilities at your family gathering (page 32).

And if Halloween is always a treat in your book, check out “Mr. Dressup” on page 63, about a feisty and fashionable 93-year-old seniors home resident and his big night out.

Traditionally, our October-november issue includes a selection of Remembrance-themed content and this year is no exception. For example, in “Marking History” beginning on page 8, contributors Gordon Baron and Cindy Phillips explore Canada’s role in the search and recovery of an American WWII aircraft that crashed on Calvert Island, roughly 400 kilometres north of Vancouver, back in 1942. If the term “Superfortress” rings a bell, you’ll want to read Donald Luger’s tribute to “Fifi”—one of only two B-29 Superfortresses from WWII that are still flight-worthy (page 42). And there are plenty more stories inside about Canada’s war eras, and the veterans who fought so hard to keep the possibility of a better future alive for all

Canadians.
