Editor’s Letter

- Gary George gary_george@rd.com

Is it just me, or does time actually go by faster the older you get? Prior to writing this letter, I was flipping through the issues we worked on in 2019 when it struck me how quickly the year has blown right by. All the more reason to “live in the moment” I suppose, and right now for many of us that means celebrating Christmas with family and friends, and getting outdoors to enjoy winter.

With that in mind, you’ll find several heartwarming stories focusing on this wonderful time of year on the pages to follow. For example, beginning on page 29, we hearken back to days gone by with “The Skating Rink” and “My Magical Christmas Tree.” In the Our Travels department (page 18), contributor Mary Dunk describes how she and her family get the most out of winter by riding the local snowmobile trails and enjoying the sights as a group. If a quieter commune with nature is more to your liking, make sure to read Jen St. Louis’ photo essay “Snow Birds,” beginning on page 8, where she shares helpful tips on photographing winter birds in a rural setting. For anyone who chooses to sit out winter entirely, I urge you to read “How I Fell in Love With Winter” on page 26 by Sarah Bruce—who recently discovered the outdoor joys of the season firsthand and is now making up for lost time.

Speaking of time—please set some aside to review your recent photos and take plenty of new ones, because our annual Share Your Canada photo contest is under way. Once again this year, there are great cash prizes up for grabs, so don’t miss out! See the contest ad on page 25 for entry details.

And that’s about it, for the moment. Have a wonderful holiday

season—catch you in 2020!
