Big on Pigs!

- By Barbara Schmidt, Kelowna, B.C.

If pigs could fly, they would have a place to stay in Kelowna

Iam not sure why I became fascinated with cute pig “things” in my adult years, but maybe it’s because when I was a child, we lived near a pig farm and I spent a lot of time playing there. Other than the fun I had, and the smell, my main memory of the place is being chased by a large sow and also a very mean goose. So, why the big fascination?

In any event, sometime in or around 2004, a Rummoli group started up among our neighbours. I took it upon myself to buy a prize for the winner, which ended up being a very cute welcome ornament in the form of a pig. That marked the beginning of my collecting craze of anything pig. My collection is not on display behind glass or safely stored away. Rather, you can find pigs just about anywhere in my household—hidden in the garden, on the napkins, in my jewellery box, hanging as wall decorations or from the patio ceiling. If you dare to leave the fridge or freezer door open, be prepared to be “oinked” at! And if it’s your birthday (or mine!), watch out for a birthday card with a pig on the front.

My little “piggery” has brought the Rummoli group and me many laughs over the years. And what is life without a few laughs and an “oink-oink” or two? The group has disbanded in recent years due to people moving elsewhere or passing away, but I still love them. My pig collection is still growing though; in fact, last year my stepson Ryan brought me an outdoor fountain featuring the biggest pig I have ever had. I named her Zoe!

We’ve hidden a loonie somewhere in this issue. Can you find it? It could be anywhere, but it’s not the one below! If you spot the loonie, tell us in which issue and on what page on a postcard, or in a letter, and mail your entry to “Spot the Loonie” Contest, P.O. Box 975, STN Main, Markham, Ont., L3P 0K7. Or join the fun online by visiting ourcanada.ca and clicking on “Spot the Loonie.” We’ll collect all the entries and have a drawing every other month.
