OUR TRAVELS: SISTERS TRIP!

Finding an inventive way to turn this duo into a trio

- By Debbie Wright, Niagara Falls, Ont.

A couple of siblings find a fun and inventive way to include their sister in a memorable trip to the Martitimes.

When both of my sisters and I get together, there’s always a lot of laughter, but when Denise and I planned a trip to visit our brother and his wife in P.EI., and our youngest sister, Wendi, couldn’t join us, we found a way to include her anyway.

Our Maritime adventure began in Hopewell, N.B., where we saw the rocks at high and low tide, but we were missing Wendi. Denise had a brilliant idea. We headed to Staples where she printed an 8 x 10 photo of Wendi’s head that we cut out and taped on a paint stick. When we reached Shediac, N.B., we stopped to take a photo with the local Giant Lobster sculpture—and “Wendi” started photo-bombing our pics!

Most of our stay in P.E.I. was spent at the beach, where I went birdwatching and looked for sea glass. Somehow, Wendi found us there, too!

Our next stop was at our brother Irvin’s house in Mount Stewart. He and his wife, Coby, moved there two years ago and are homesteading. Their gardens are gorgeous and their fixer-upper house is a work in progress. Irv finished drywalling our bedroom just before we arrived. After dinner every night we would play cards (an old family tradition). They introduced us to the game Monopoly Deal. We played it every night and laughed till we cried, stealing property, taking each others’ Monopoly money and trying hard to win. Poor Denise never won a game. She made up for it at the airport on the way home where she won every game of Crazy Eights Countdown.

We drove to Cavendish and, as we checked into our motel room, Denise noticed the bed seemed to be on a slant, where the foot end was higher than the head. I put my suitcase down and it rolled all the way to

the bathroom. It was too funny. Denise had a very good inverted sleep, while I put my pillow at the foot of the bed.

We visited Anne (with an “e”) and Dianna at Anne of Green Gables and met them as they were working on their needlepoint. When asked if they knew how to do it before they got this job, Anne replied, “What job? Miss Stacy taught us when she came to the school.” Farmer Sloane was cooling o in the barn doing card tricks and fooling everyone with his skill. What a great time we had there. We even tried the famous raspberry cordial.

Our last stop was in southeastern P.E.I. at the “mouse cottage.” Before dinner in our lovely waterfront cottage, I was resting with my feet up when Denise screamed “It’s a mouse!” The little rodent ran under my chair, over to the kitchen and then under the dishwasher. We laughed because it was ONLY a little mouse and we went out to dinner. When we came back, we noticed there were mouse droppings on the kitchen counter and in the sink. We were resting when Denise screamed again. A large mouse had run out of the bathroom and under her feet at the table. She stomped her feet and it started to run up the stairs towards the bedrooms but it went into a crack on the first step. We laughed so hard and thought maybe we should call the landlord. Denise went up to change her clothes and another mouse ran out of the bedroom. By this time, I was doubled over laughing until she told me it came out of my bedroom. She called the landlord, who asked if we wanted to leave, but everywhere else was booked so we decided to stay—until Denise found another mouse running out of her room and then mouse droppings in her bed. She called the landlord again who said get out of there right away and come over to sleep in her spare room. So we had a lovely slumber party, a great breakfast and a wonderful visit with a local lady.

We spent the final two nights of our trip relaxing at the beautiful Mclean House Inn in Souris, making jewellery from the sea glass we’d collected on the beaches there. What a great way to end our funfilled vacation!
