Chan 2nd after short program at Grand Prix Final

MARSEILLE, France — Yuzuru Hanyu took the lead with an electrifyi­ng performanc­e in the short program on Thursday to stay on course for a fourth straight Grand Prix Final figure skating title while Canada’s Patrick Chan was right behind him in second place.

In perfect rhythm to the funky sounds of “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince, the Olympic champion from Japan brought the crowd to its feet at the Palais Omnisport, as he recorded his season-best score of 106.53.

Chan, a three-time world champion from Toronto, had a score of 99.76 and two-time world champion Javier Fernandez was third with 91.76.

Oleksiak wins bronze in world short course swimming

WINDSOR, Ont. — Canada’s Olympic star Penny Oleksiak won bronze in the 100-metre freestyle at the world short course swimming championsh­ips on Thursday.

The 16-year-old from Toronto finished in third in 52.01 seconds, lowering her own Canadian record for the third time at the meet. Oleksiak, who won gold in the event at last summer’s Olympics, broke her Canadian record in Wednesday’s heats and semifinals.

The medal was Canada’s third of the meet.

CHIEFS 21, RAIDERS 13

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Tyreek Hill had touchdowns receiving and on a punt return, Kansas City’s defence made life miserable for Oakland quarterbac­k Derek Carr and the Chiefs beat the Raiders 21-13 on a frigid Thursday night to take control of the AFC West.

Charcandri­ck West also had a touchdown run for the Chiefs (10-3). They moved into a first-place tie with Oakland (10-3), but hold the tiebreaker with two wins over their longtime divisional rival.

Carr was 17-of-41 for 117 yards passing, while Alex Smith threw for 261 yards for the Chiefs.
