Wrong man, wrong time

Editor: Re: Letter to the editor, Donald Trump: Right Man at the right time.

Mr. Sherman certainly has every right as an individual to express his opinion.

He suggests that Trump is unencumbered because he is an “independent,” but we do not know to what extent he is independent of behind-the-scene business deals. Plus he is the Republican candidate, which must encumber him somewhat to this well-established political organization. It is also noted that he is equally free to act within his powers for the good of — Donald Trump.

Mr. Sherman also alludes to Trump’s ability to work within the political system. But he can’t know this. Trump’s lack of political experience is a huge detriment. Would Mr. Sherman also applaud a politician with zero business experience taking over as the head of a huge corporation?

Trump’s purported business acumen is largely smoke and mirrors if a person takes the time to research and review his history, not to mention very recent and ongoing lawsuits, some regarding his businesses and some in the personal realm. Trump maintains he wants to bring back the ‘good old days’ so the U.S.A. can recapture its lustre. But only fools want to go backward.

One might be able to revive success in general, but it isn’t going to happen with the same forces and situations that were successful 50 years ago.

What is needed now is new investments, technologies, automations, that will drive us forward to produce, among others things, alternatives to fossil fuel. This is what will create the new jobs required to get people back into the American work force.

Supporters of Mr. Trump have conveniently chosen to ignore all his racist and misogynistic remarks of the campaign (assuming they don’t agree with him). They have not cared or been able to imagine that he could have been referring to their wife, daughter, or granddaughter, not to mention all the minorities he targeted.

No country is an island. Trump’s election has done no favours to the U.S. or any other countries (maybe Russia?), and it happens at a time when true leadership is required. Trump’s election has the potential to cause huge rifts in the world and within the U.S.A. that haven’t been seen in decades.

But Mr. Sherman’s right to vote and express his opinion is sacrosanct here in North America in 2016, so we can only hope that he has done the right thing.
