Lakers sink competitio­n, undefeated at tournament

The Pen-Hi Lakers junior and Grade 9 teams each breezed to four straight victories at a 10-team junior girls’ basketball tournament at Pen-Hi and Princess Margaret schools on Friday and Saturday.

The co-host Princess Margaret Mustangs went 2-2 in the tourney.

Lakers 47 Kelowna Christian 21: Player of the game Kali Loewen collected 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Pen-Hi junior team won their opener.

Other key contributo­rs were Kalli Doell (8 points, 8 steals, 4 rebounds), Kayley Davies (7 points, 4 rebounds), Jennifer Hayman (5 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals) and Emma Terris (5 steals and 4 points)

Lakers 50 Argyle 26: Davies was player of the game with 14 points, 4 steals and 3 rebounds as Pen-Hi breeze to the win. Loewen (11 points, 8 rebounds), Hayman (8 rebounds, 6 points and 4 steals) and Olivia Devito (5 assists and 4 points) also had strong games.

Lakers 51 Carson Graham 14: Doell racked up 24 points with 4 rebounds and 4 steals in the third-game win. Devito, Terris and Mckenna Clarke each had six points and three steals. Doell and Devito shared POG honours.

Lakers 37 OK Mission 30: Loewen had 12 points and 8 rebounds as Pen-Hi prevailed in a battle of the No. 2 and No. 3 ranked teams in the Okanagan.

Doell (6 points, 3 assists and 4 steals), Terris (5 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals) and Hayman (6 rebounds, 4 points, 4 assists and 4 steals) also had big games. Terris and Kinsey Corday shared the POG award as the Lakers improved to 13-2 on the season.

The Lakers also improved to 4-0 in South Zone league play by defeating Similkamee­n 74-7.

Clarke had 17 points and three steals, Loewen 12 points and 9 rebounds, Corday logged 10 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals and Davies 10 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals.

At the tourney, Princess Margaret won their first two games 50-17 over Pleasant Valley and 36-33 over Mount Boucherie before falling 36-35 to Vernon and 49-23 to the Pen-Hi Grade 9s.

The Pen-Hi Grade 9s also beat Argyle 41-23 and Vernon 45-39 and Pleasant Valley 63-10.

In the win over Argyle, game MVP Maria Iannone and Jaden Yamamoto had nine points apiece and Emma Barron had two boards.

Barron had 11 points and 8 rebounds to take game MVP honours and Kayla Haukaas had 8 points and 5 steals in the victory over Vernon.

Game MVP Sophia Brydon notched 24 points and 9 boards in the triumph over Pleasant Valley. Barron had 8 points and Kass Hintz 6 points.

Brydon had 12 points and game Haukaas 11 in the win over Maggie. Iannone added 6 assists.
