Bail hearing today
Harley Maxwell McBride, 35, faces charges over shooting early Monday
Both the victim and alleged gunman in a shooting earlier this week in Penticton have checkered pasts, court records show. Levi Savard, 24, sustained a non-lifethreatening gunshot wound around 4:30 a.m. Monday outside a home on the 500 block of Eckhardt Avenue. The alleged shooter, Harley Maxwell McBride, 35, was taken into custody soon after.
Police haven’t said what type of gun was used, nor where Savard was hit.
McBride has since been charged with assault with a weapon. He’s set for a bail hearing today in provincial court in Penticton.
In August 2012, McBride was sentenced in Penticton to nine months’ house arrest for trafficking in a controlled substance and also slapped with a 10-year firearms prohibition.
Savard is no stranger to the legal system, either.
He was in provincial court in Penticton as recently as last month seeking to be relieved of some or all of the conditions attached to a one-year probation order he was handed in December 2015 as a result of a conviction for mischief involving a domestic partner.
In April 2012, he was sentenced to six months’ house arrest for possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and fined $500 for possession of a controlled substance.
Savard was also mentioned by police in a February 2014 press release regarding a drug bust at a Penticton motel.
Mounties said he was arrested after showing up with cocaine while police were executing a search warrant against a heroin dealer, who had three children in the room with him.
While the release said Savard was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, there is no indication of that in his court records.
Meanwhile, the scene where he was shot remained behind police tape Wednesday afternoon.
The secure area centred on the backyard of 549 Eckhardt Ave., which shares a rear laneway with homes on Orchard Avenue.
Neighbours told The Herald they were unsure who lived at the home where the shooting occurred, but reported seeing people coming and going from the residence at all hours.
Penticton RCMP spokesman Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth said Wednesday the investigation remains active.
He said the alleged gunman and victim knew each other and the incident was not gang-related.
Wrigglesworth said previously the same individuals were together approximately three hours before the shooting at an apartment on the 600 block of Martin Street. During that altercation, two men allegedly barged into a home the victim was visiting and assaulted him, then fired off a shot. No one was injured at that scene.
