WEEZER COMING TO SOEC, APRIL 8

- By JAMES MILLER

One of the most critically acclaimed rock bands of the 1990s is coming to Penticton.

Weezer will perform at the South Okanagan Events Centre on Saturday, April 8.

The Los Angeles-based rock band first hit the scene in 1994 with its self-titled debut album (later unofficially known as The Blue Album) which spawned the singles Buddy Holly, Say It Ain’t So and Undone- The Sweater Song.

In the video for Buddy Holly, acclaimed director Spike Jonze featured the 1970s television series Happy Days and the chorus pays homage to 70s icon Mary Tyler Moore.

Weezer easily avoided the sophomore jinx on its second album, Pinkerton, which included the singles El Scorcho, The Good Life and Pink Triangle. The album was voted as the 16th best album of all-time by readers of Rolling Stone magazine.

In total the band has released 10 studio albums and sold more than 17 million records.

Their most recent release, a fourth selftitled album (dubbed The White Album) reached No. 4 on the Billboard charts in 2016 and included the songs King of the World, Thank God for Girls, and Do You Wanna Get High?

The present line-up includes original members Rivers Cuomo (lead vocals, guitar), Patrick Wilson (drums) and Brian Bell (guitar, keyboards), along with Scott Shriner (bass), who joined the band in 2002.

Opening for Weezer is The Trews from Antigonish, N. S. The band is best known for the singles Beautiful & Tragic, New King, What’s Fair is Fair, Hope & Ruin, Hold Me In Your Arms, and Not Ready to Go. Also in the line-up for April 8 is The Flatliners, a Toronto-based punk band which has released four albums since 2005.
