Astrologer predicts complex, confusing Year of the Rooster

- By Okanagan Saturday staff

Ken Leung says 2017 will be a complex and confusing year. Judging by the political chaos happening in America, it’s hard to deny that statement.

According to the Chinese calendar, the Year of the Rooster begins today and celebrations across the world will take place. For example, the Okanagan Chinese Canadian Association is hosting a Spring Lantern Festival today, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., in Kelowna at the Parkinson Recreation Apple Hall. “This is the Year of the Fire Rooster,” says Leung, a West Kelowna resident and Chinese metaphysicist.

“This year is a combination of fire and metal, and fire is on top of metal. The symbolism means that government or management is weak and the worker is strong. It’s going to be a splitting, complex and confusing year.”

For those curious about the astrology side of 2017, various websites say the Rooster is the 10th year/animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. Years of the Rooster include 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, 2029, etc.

The Rooster is almost the epitome of fidelity and punctuality. For ancestors who had no alarm clocks, the rooster’s crowing was significant, as it could awaken people to get up and start working. In Chinese culture, another symbolic meaning that the rooster carries is exorcising evil spirits.

Last year was the Year of the Fire Monkey, which began on Feb. 8. Why the Chinese new year doesn’t begin on the same day, every year, is due to the lunar cycle, says Leung. The new year usually falls between Jan. 21 and Feb. 20.

Leung adds that government, companies or leaders will impose a lot of decisions or regulations.

He also says 2017 is in favour of Fire and Earth, and that Earth will benefit the real estate market, but that it won’t grow as fast it has in the recent past. Leung says the Fire aspect will favour electronics and electrical-based industries, such as those that create appliances, while financial institutions and the oil industry will be relatively stable.

On the homefront, Leung says 2017 is a relationship year, one that could feature chaos in the family. It’s a big year for both marriage and divorce, possible conflict and sex scandals, he says. Self control, he added, is fundamental to diminishing problems.
