NFL needs better overtime method

I’ve never been sold on the NFL’s overtime policy and Sunday evening did nothing to reinforce my opinion. The overtime quarter in Super Bowl LI was decided once New England won the coin toss. Fans should have filed out of NRG Stadium to get a jump on the traffic.

Matt Ryan played a terrific game for the Falcons, and he wasn’t allowed a single play in overtime. I’m certain this will be a topic of debate for years to come.

As a footnote, it was indeed a masterful performance by Tom Brady but let’s be honest... they were lucky.

As for halftime, when Lady Gaga came out at the start of the decade I figured she’d be a flash in the pan. Boy was I wrong. She’s one for the ages. When she’s not doing her stunning pop music she’s collaborating with the likes of Tony Bennett or wowing Julie Andrews with a medley from The Sound of Music at last year’s Academy Awards.

It was also nice to see such a warm showing of affection for George H. Bush during the pregame ceremonies.

I’m working my way through the nominees for Best Picture and although I’m still two or three short my favourite thus far is Lion, which dethroned Manchester By the Sea, which dethroned La La Land.

Dierks Bentley is in town tonight performing at the South Okanagan Events Centre. He’s among the nominees at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards for best country duo or group performance — Different for Girls, with Elle King. It’s his 11th Grammy nomination, still with no wins. For those who recognize his name but can’t think of what he sang, his No. 1 singles on the various U.S. country charts to date have been: What Was I Thinkin, Come a Little Closer, Settle for a Slowdown, Every Mile a Memory, Free and Easy (Down the Road I Go), Feel That Fire, Sideways, Am I the Only One, Home, 5-1-5-0, I Hold On, Say You Do, Somewhere on a Beach, and my personal favourite, Drunk On A Plane. He was also part of the Forever Country collaboration, a cool mash-up of Take Me Home, Country Roads, On the Road Again, and I Will Always Love You (Dolly Parton version).

The What the Hell tour includes two opening acts Cole Swindell and Jon Pardi and begins at 8 p.m. tonight. It should be a good one.

Here’s my Tuesday evening. City council is holding a public hearing at 6 p.m., I hope to get out of there by 7 p.m. to cover John Horgan’s NDP town hall, and then skip the opening act and make it to Dierks Bentley in time for his first number.

I was home nursing a head cold but my wife went to see the Alfie Zappacosta concert at the Shatford Centre and presented by Pen-Hi’s music department. By all accounts, it was great. She must have been impressed, she bought two of his CDs. Thanks to Justin Glibbery for bringing yet another amazing artist to Penticton.
