Rona closing in on Hometown Cup

Paul Borba produced a hat trick and Ron Dirksen logged a goal and three assists as Rona beat Penticton Lock and Key 8-6 in Bad Tattoo Brewery Masters Indoor Soccer League action Sunday at the Adidas Sportsplex.

Darryl Pace scored twice and Venna Veselka and Alan Clarke also connected for Rona, which needs just one win from their remaining two games to clinch first place and the “Hometown Cup” sponsored by Kondola’s.

Norman Peters and Peter Ruocco each scored twice and Zico Pescada and Nikos Theodosaki­s had solos for PLK, which trailed 3-2 at halftime. Ruocco added two assists and Pescada had one to take his runaway league-leading points total to 54.

Darren Schimpf notched a hat trick as Harvey-Lister-Webb kept their slim hopes of finishing first alive with a 6-4 win over TC Auto Sales.

Andy Burt had a goal and two assists and Jon Padgett and Gord McLaren also clicked for HLW, which led 3-2 at halftime.

Peter Toth, Carlos Mendonca, Mike Beliveau and Ray Evans scored for TC Auto and Brian Johnston had two assists.

With only two rounds of league play left, Rona has 26 points, HLW 23, PLK 15 and TC Auto 14.

The “Lucky Players of the Week” was a clean sweep for the Rona team. Darryl Pace got a $20 Bad Tattoo gift card, and Venna Veselka and Duarte Francisco each got $10 BTB gift certificat­es.

In games this Sunday, TC Auto plays Rona at 10 a.m. and PLK takes on HLW at 11:15 a.m.
