Game of politics is down and dirty

-

Dear Editor: Evidently this province didn’t learn too much in the way of the “do’s” and “don’ts” from the recent U.S. election. Or, did they learn too much?

The jury is currently out but should reconvene soon.

With the election quickly approaching, Christy Clark seems to be following what might be referred to as “The Trumpology Platform.” Loosely translated, “Trumpology” takes in any and all personal issues; makes unfounded innuendoes; prevarications and although quoted by the press and printed or recorded, denies all of it. For Ms. Clark, Trump seems to be a good mentor.

Recently, our illustrious premier was quoted in the press and on visual media “that the NDP had hacked their computers to get party platform information prior to the election.” This was an unsubstantiated statement that she could not — no — would not corroborate. Imagine that, innuendoes that she wants people to believe but innuendoes that she cannot or will not confirm. Does this scenario sound familiar?

The game of politics, as most of us know, seems to be down and dirty. It does not follow Marquis of Queensbury-type rules. It is case of hitting below the belt and political posturing. A fine example of democracy in action you say?

It would be naive to think that any and all political elections would be above board. It would also be naive to think that if there were a newspaper published with “strictly good, honest, clean news” that there would be a plethora of readers. At best, any such publication might carry such niceties as Mrs. Snodgrass held a social tea and bazaar at her residence; Bishop Smith baptized a set of triplets at St. Bartholomew’s Parish recently. Just plain mundane trivia. Who wants to read only that?

Back to basics. Many politicians seem to employ thought-provoking tactics that may or may not be true. Ms. Clark is a prime example. Before the last election, Ms. Clark made some pie-in-the-sky promises. Most of the electorate bought into this political mumbo-jumbo. Is the pie baked yet? Of course not! Will the recipe be the same? Most likely, based on how the purse strings are opening recently and the many photo ops that she has appeared at. She continues to operate on the premise of “step into my parlor said the spider to the fly.”

She seems to parallel The Donald in many areas and massages things when they don’t go as planned. Excuses don’t get things done. However, many politicians seem use this as justification.

With the election coming, do your homework. Separate the wheat from the chaff before voting! Ron Barillaro Penticton
