Triathlete, ex-CFL’er to talk at living fair
Event set for Saturday at Penticton Trade and Convention Centre
Headline speakers for the upcoming Healthy Living Fair in Penticton include a former CFL all-star who’s trying to “rewild” men and a local professional triathlete who hasn’t let epilepsy slow her down.
The fair, set for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre, will feature 60 different organizations that support a healthy living focus, some of which will lead healthy eating sessions and activity demonstrations. There is no cost to attend. Shea Emry will kick off the event with a speech at 9:15 a.m. regarding men’s mental health.
The linebacker played eight seasons in the CFL – twice winning the Grey Cup with the Montreal Alouettes – before concussions forced him to retire in 2016.
He is now devoting his time to Wellmen, a sort of men’s adventure club that aims “to create recurring endorphin inducing experiences that rewild men back to nature,” according to a press release from the Healthy Living Fair.
Challenge Penticton 2016 women’s champion Jen Annett then takes the stage at 1 p.m.
The Penticton triathlete will talk about how she’s been able to compete at the professional level while living with epilepsy.
“This will be a great chance to learn more about epilepsy, mental strength, and positive thinking,” the press release notes.
“She will also be touching base on her history with mental health, and how all of these ‘hurdles’ have made her a stronger person, and what you can do to better yourself.”
Other speakers include Lisa Kilgour, a registered nurse for Nature’s Fare Markets, whose talk at 10 a.m. will cover healthy eating; registered dietician Sandra Turnbull at 11:30 a.m., who will discuss body image; and Emily Mayne at 2:30 p.m., who will tell seniors the questions they should be asking their doctors and pharmacists about medications, in particular regarding how they interact with alcohol.
The fair is hosted by the Okanagan Similkameen Healthy Living Fair Society.
