Wenatchee scoring sensation named MVP over Vees’ goalie

The Wenatchee Wild was the best team in the regular season and were aptly rewarded in the B.C. Hockey League awards.

BCHL scoring champ Brendan Harris of the Wild captured the Vern Dye Memorial Trophy as league MVP. Penticton Vees goalie Mat Robson was one of three finalists for the honour.

Harris also took the Bob Fenton Trophy as Most Sportsmanl­ike Player and the Brett Hull Trophy (Top Scorer with 23 goals, 98 points)

Bruce Allison Memorial Trophy (Rookie of the Year): Cam Donaldson, Powell River Kings

Top Defenceman Award: Jake Stevens, Victoria Grizzlies

As well as the top scorer trophy, other non-voting award winners were:

Wally Forslund Trophy (goalie tandem with the lowest combined goalsagain­st average): Mat Robson and Nolan Hildebrand, Penticton Vees (2.14)

Goaltendin­g Trophy (lowest goals-against average with minimum 1,000 minutes played): Darion Hanson, Vernon Vipers (1.84)

Ron Boileau Memorial Trophy (best regular-season record): Wenatchee Wild (45-9-4-0, 94 points). The first round of the playoffs started on the weekend and continued Monday. In the Interior Division, the Merritt Centennial­s were in good shape coming home after back-to-back road wins over the West Kelowna Warriors, while the Trail Smoke Eaters won twice at home over the Salmon Arm Silverback­s.

West Kelowna and Merritt played Monday in Merritt and again tonight in Merritt at 7 p.m.

The Trail and Salmon Arm series resumes with Games 3 and 4 tonight and Wednesday at Shaw Centre.

In the Island Division, Victoria and Nanaimo split the first two games in Victoria, while Powell River won twice at home over Cowichan Valley.

In the Mainland Division, Wenatchee kept rolling with two easy home wins over Prince George, while Chilliwack and Langley split the first two games in Chilliwack.

The Vees and Vernon Vipers got first-round byes and do not play until opening the second round at home on March 17.
