RDOS reconsidering silence on wineries

- By JAMES MILLER

The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen could revisit its policy on remaining neutral on winery applications.

At its most recent meeting, the board received correspondence on behalf of both Corcelettes Estate Winery in Keremeos and Harker’s Organics Rustic Winery in Cawston. Corcelettes is applying for structural alterations and a picnic area endorsement; Harker’s wants a winery lounge and picnic area endorsement.

The present policy of the RDOS is to remain neutral and not provide comment, ultimately leaving it in the hands of the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch.

Several directors at Thursdays’ meeting suggested the district be more involved in the process — similar to the City of Penticton, which brings all liquor endorsements before the public. “Looking at it, it comes across as a negative,” Penticton director Judy Sentes said. “People may ask, ‘Why wouldn’t they support it?’ particularly when we’re so heavily invested in the wine industry.

“It warrants coming back to this table because when it was put in place, the situation that warranted it at that time may have changed. Maybe it just needs to be reinforced.”

CAO Bill Newell said if the policy changes, public consultation will be required along with public hearings, which could create an additional strain on staff time.

No decision was made, but directors could table a recommendation at a future meeting.
