Might consider going Green

-

Dear Editor: It seems my letter “Bring Back the SoCred Party” (Herald, April 13) ruffled some Green supporter’s feathers when I referred to them as bicycle-riding computer geeks. I apparently left out granola munching and latte slurping as well but I thought with all the nut allergies and lactose intolerance out there that would be stretching it. Just kidding folks! I suspect that Ms. Sahlmark, the Green candidate, is far more committed to her beliefs and desire to change things than either of her other two opponents who are probably more interested in keeping or getting a cushy job with great benefits and an awesome pension.

After reading the article in Monday’s Herald regarding the struggle for jobs in rural areas, perhaps I should check out the Green Party’s platform on this issue. After all we have Christy Clark our premier and Steve Thomson, our minister of the environment, promoting high-speed Internet so rural folks can get coding jobs that will soon be exported to India; the Site C Dam which will supposedly provide power that we don’t need; and LNG projects which may never happen as the solution to create permanent rural area jobs.

Instead of pipe dreams and jobs passing through, why not end the disgraceful practise of raw log exports and tie in tree farm licences in specific regions with manufacturing jobs in those regions like they used to be?

Perhaps open up all the massive amounts of wasted wood in logging operations to end product manufacturers instead of allowing the forest companies to burn them up. These are just a few ideas.

However, with all parties seeming to pander for those urbanite votes and only paying lip service to the hinterland I doubt there are any solutions coming soon. Andy Richards
