Station sorry for insensitive graphic
BOSTON — A cable news station has apologized for accompanying a story on police stops of minorities with a graphic that included the term “colored people.”
New England Cable News used the graphic Wednesday with a story based on a review by The Associated Press of the rate at which minorities in Boston are subjected to police stops.
The NBC-owned outlet apologized after viewers complained. NECN on Friday said the language accidentally appeared in the graphic but called it “highly inappropriate” and said the station regrets the error.
The Associated Press review found 71 per cent of police-civilian encounters from 2015 through early 2016 involved persons of colour, while whites comprised about 22 per cent.
Quake shakes southern Philippines
MANILA, Philippines — An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck off a southern Philippine province Saturday and prompted a local tsunami warning, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Renato Solidum of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the pre-dawn quake was centred at sea off Sarangani province and struck relatively deep below the seabed, causing much of its power to dissipate. The quake roused people from sleep, but there were no reports of casualties.
IS claims Baghdad bomb that kills 4
BAGHDAD — The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for a bombing that targeted a police station in Baghdad’s centre Friday night, and Iraqi officials said the blast killed four people and wounded eight.
The attack was carried out by a suicide car bomber, according to police and hospital officials.
The explosion targeted an entrance to the traffic police station in Baghdad’s Karrada neighbourhood.
The attack comes as Iraqi forces struggle to push back Islamic State group militants in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, the last pocket of significant urban territory the group holds in Iraq.
