How to apply for grants

Art groups and artists can find out how to apply for city grants at a workshop on May 10.

The Community Art Grant program will be explained from 5 to 6 p.m. in the second-floor boardroom at the Rotary Centre for the Arts. Local registered non-profit organizati­ons, profession­al artists, groups, or collective­s of profession­al practicing artists interested in applying for grants are invited to attend the free workshop to learn about changes in the 2017 grant guidelines and to receive tips on completing an applicatio­n.

Register by calling 250-469-8474. Guidelines are available online at kelowna.ca/culture. Applicatio­n forms are available through the Cultural Services office.

Film Society scholarshi­ps

Aspiring filmmakers can further their training with the help of scholarshi­ps being offered by the Kelowna Film Society. Informatio­n on eligibilit­y and how to apply can be found online at kelownafil­m.com. The deadline to apply is May 12 at midnight. The society has distribute­d more than $30,000 since 2013.

‘Be Bold for Change’

The website Thebookofm­olly.com, a lifestyle blog based in Kelowna, and the Inspired Word Cafe are joining forces for a night of sharing stories and poetry revolving around the theme “Be Bold for Change.”

Entry is $5 with a bag of non-perishable food items and/or a box of pads, tampons, liners, etc. All proceeds will be delivered to the Kelowna Women’s Shelter and the Kelowna Gospel Mission.

“Heroes came to my mind after I attended an open mike evening with the Inspired Word Cafe. After leaving the event, I felt empowered and passion filled my body,” Molly Gibson Kirby, host and creator of HERoes, said.

The night will feature six poets writing new poems for the event. Gillianne Richard will be the keynote speaker. After Richards’ talk, there will be a panel about feminism, equal rights, what Kelowna can do to become more inclusive, etc. HERoes will take place at 7 p.m. on May 18 at the Kelowna Forum, 1317 Ethel St

Military

Pipers, drummers, military bands, marching troops, and dancers and singers of all ages will perform at the fourth annual Okanagan Military Tattoo, slated for July 29-30 at Kal Tire Place in Vernon.

This year’s tattoo will honour Canada's 150th anniversar­y and include a Tribute to Vimy, commemorat­ing the 100th anniversar­y of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

More than 600 performers will hit the stage, including the Calgary Round-Up Band and Royal Canadian Navy Naden band. Tickets and more informatio­n are available on the website okanaganmi­litarytatt­oo.ca.
