School rankings released

Private schools dominate some of the highest ranked schools in the Okanagan, but in the latest Fraser Institute report, a Kelowna public school took the top spot across the region.

The think-tank’s annual rankings, released Saturday, are based on provincial exams taken by students in grades 10 to 12.

“It is objective evidence with regard to generally how the school is doing in academics compared to all the other schools in the province as reflected by these province-wide tests,” said Peter Cowley, director of performance studies for the Fraser Institute.

“We know there’s a lot more to the school than academics and even within academics there’s more than those things that are being tested, but at the present time and for the foreseeable future, these are the only student results that are available that meet our criteria.”

In the Okanagan Skaha district, Summerland Secondary was ranked the highest secondary school at number 58, followed by Princess Margaret at number 71 and Penticton Secondary at number 101.

In Vernon, the highest ranked secondary school was Vernon Christian at number 18 across B.C., followed by Kalamalka Secondary at number 101.

In the Okanagan Similkameen, Oliver’s Southern Okanagan Secondary was the top-ranked school at number 113 across B.C., followed by Osoyoos Secondary at number 128 and Similkameen Secondary in Keremeos at number 135.
